#GirlsAre Athletes

Today, girls in the United States are far less likely than boys to achieve the recommended amounts of physical activity—by age 14, girls are dropping out of sports at two times the rate of boys. Research shows, however, that girls and women who play sports have higher levels of confidence and self-esteem, lower levels of depression, a more positive body image, and overall higher states of psychological well-being.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation has received a cooperative agreement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) School Health Branch to provide technical assistance and training to school districts and school buildings, to support healthy eating and physical activity in out-of-school time (OST) settings.

The National AfterSchool Association (NAA) received the Alliance for a Healthier Generation's Healthy Out-of-School Time Hero Award. The award recognizes an integral community organization that contributes to the healthy development of its youth by focusing on healthy eating and physical activity.

Jessica Hay, California Afterschool Network program director, recently had the opportunity to discuss the National Afterschool Association (NAA) Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards (HEPA) during a Lights on Afterschool webinar, and offer some tips for incorporating them into family and community events such as Lights On Afterschool.

In the United States, approximately one in three children ages two to 19 is overweight or obese. Organizations such as the Healthy Out-Of-School Time (HOST) Coalition, RTI International (RTI) and the National Afterschool Association (NAA) have implemented standards to promote a healthy lifestyle among our nation's young people.

Eating Healthier and Moving More in OST

Out-of-school time (OST) programs serve more than 10 million young people per year, which provides a significant opportunity to promote healthy eating and physical activity. Until fairly recently, however, the field has lacked a comprehensive set of operationalizable standards for healthy eating and physical activity (Childhood Obesity 2012).

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, National AfterSchool Association, Nickelodeon, and Penguin Young Readers are joining forces to launch "Peter Rabbit: Hop to Health."
