Survey Highlights Growing Impact of Student Supports in Out-of-School Time Programs

Tuesday, August 27, 2024

To gain insight into the expanding role of out-of-school time (OST) programs in delivering high-impact student supports, the National Partnership for Student Success (NPSS) Support Hub at Johns Hopkins' Everyone Graduates Center (EGC), in collaboration with the Afterschool Alliance, conducted a comprehensive survey among OST providers.

The findings reveal that 62% of surveyed OST providers are actively offering student supports aligned with NPSS's key focus areas, which include high-intensity tutoring, mentoring, student success coaching, college and career advising, postsecondary transition coaching, and wraparound services that connect students and families to essential community resources. Notably, nearly half of the respondents provide mentoring. Additionally, 20% of providers are engaged in college and career advising, postsecondary transition coaching, student success coaching, and/or high-intensity tutoring.

The survey indicates a notable increase in the number of adults providing these critical supports within OST programs during the 2023-24 school year compared to the previous year. It also highlights a growing demand for these evidence-based supports, demonstrating their value in enriching the student experience during out-of-school time.

A key factor contributing to the availability of these supports appears to be government funding. Providers with access to COVID relief funds, 21st Century Community Learning Center funding, AmeriCorps funding, and state government resources were significantly more likely to offer NPSS supports than those without such financial backing.
