What is a Virtual Convention?
NAA20 Reimagined is offered as a two-part virtual series.
Part 1 March 16 -18 - Live online events with inspirational and highly relevant keynotes and daily interactive sessions led by NAA’s Top Presenters. Information may be found at https://naaweb.org/attend/schedule. Live events were recorded and will be available in Part 2.
Part 2 April 19 - May 2 - NAA Convention is the place where afterschool professionals and leaders go to share, learn, connect and be inspired, and going virtual makes the experience more accessible than ever. NAA20 Reimagined Part 2 will incorporate all of this through live and recorded sessions, discussions boards, a virtual learning expo and more! Participants join at any time from desktops, laptops, tablets or mobile devices with the internet. Information may be found at https://naaweb.org/naa20-reimagined and will be updated as details become available.
How will I participate in a Virtual Convention when I have a full schedule? What if we can’t join at a specific time?
Participants jcan oin at any time from desktops, laptops, tablets or mobile devices anywhere they can connect with the internet. Part 2 sessions will be available on-demand to watch at your convenience at anytime between April 19 and May 2. Several sessions from Part 1 were recorded and will be available to registered participants to watch at their convenience during Part 2.
Do I have to pay an additional fee for Virtual Convention?
There is no additional fee, as the convention itself transitioned to the Virtual Convention format. Your original registration fee covers all things related to the Virtual Convention.
How do I access the Virtual Convention?
Details on how to access the NAA20 Reimagined sessions will be provided to you via email. Please be sure to check your email and spam folders for the communications over the next several days.
Note, you will need to login to your NAA membership account to access instruction on how to join the virtual events. If you do not know your member login information, request a password reminder via this link in preparation for the event.
Will there be an Afterschool for All Challenge?
If you were registered for the Challenge you should have received an email with information about the virtual events from the Afterschool Alliance. Everyone can go to the Take Action Center to let your members of Congress know about all the important things afterschool programs do for your community.
How do we get our professional development hours?
A training certificate similar to what is typically offered in the Convention program book will be available for download on the NAA20 Reimagined Part 2 platform. The certificate may be used to document your hours.
If I wasn’t registered for NAA Convention 2020, is it possible to still register and participate in NAA20 Reimagined – Virtual Convention?
Yes. The cost to register is $635. To register, please visit the registration page here.
Can I get a refund for NAA Convention 2020 and/or the Afterschool for All Challenge?
Because we are not cancelling the event, but rather transitioning it to a virtual experience, the current NAA Convention 2020 refund/cancellation policy remains in effect. Refund requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
When will we be notified about the status of our refund requests?
Those who requested a refund should expect to hear from us by April 30th, hopefully sooner. We are working hard on this and will be in touch as soon as we have an update. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.
In order to make a fully informed decision about participation, can you share more information about refunds for NAA20 Convention event and if there is a cost to participating in a virtual event?
Your participation in the NAA20 Reimagined Virtual Convention has no impact on the status of your refund request. We are doing our best to honor all requests and working tirelessly during this unprecedented time. We plan to provide an update on the status of all requests by March 20th. There is not an additional cost.
Therefore, we encourage your participation and encourage you to join us! NAA20 Reimagined Virtual Convention is a way afterschool professionals and leaders come together for inspiration during a time when face-to-face is not possible. In addition to connections and inspiration, participation provides opportunities for everyone to learn and share. The sessions will all be recorded, so even if you can’t participate in the live sessions, you can watch them during NAA20 Reimagined Part 2 April 19 -May 2.
Can I get a partial discount or a reduced rate for attending Virtual Convention?
We are not offering partial discounts or reduced rates at this time.
Can part of or all my fees be applied to next year?
We are exploring the available options.
NAA is more than a Convention—it’s a community. NAA Convention is the place where afterschool professionals and leaders go to share, learn, connect, and be inspired. NAA20 Reimagined - Virtual Convention will incorporate all of this and more!

What to Wear
Plan for business casual clothing, dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes.
Speaking of what to wear, the first public event is a Rally for Afterschool at the General Session on March 15 at 6 p.m. Participants wear statement clothing (like slogan t-shirts) and bring rally signs (or make them on-site) showing support of afterschool. During the Rally, participants sit in designated areas with other members of their states. A lead has been identified for each state who, if they haven’t already, will reach out to you with more details about the state plans for the Rally.
Prepare for Basic Needs
Plan to bring a water bottle and small snacks to stay hydrated and nourished. We’ll have water coolers and provide several opportunities for food, but you don’t want to miss anything because you’re stuck in line at the hotel gift shop!
Health and Wellness
With the ongoing concerns about the COVID-19 virus, we want you to know the safety of convention participants is of utmost importance to us. NAA Convention will proceed as planned. However, we have made some modifications to address concerns.
Out of an abundance of caution, we are declaring NAA20 a “Handshake-Free Zone.” Try these alternative handshake ideas at Convention.
In addition, our event team is working with the hotel to ensure appropriate health and safety measures are in place for all participants. We also trust that participants will undertake all necessary precautions to protect their own health and safety—by traveling with hand sanitizers—while at the event and during travel.
In the meantime, please consider these proactive precautions as recommended by the Center for Disease Control, to protect yourself and those around you.
Importantly, if you have a respiratory illness or fever, please stay home.

Summer learning programs offer invaluable spaces to engage youth in learning and development during the months when many students lose ground. High-quality programs keep kids safe and can produce measurable benefits in math, reading and social and emotional learning, however good attendance is critical for kids to experience those positive benefits.
In their multi-year study of five voluntary, district-led summer programs, the RAND Corporation found that students needed to attended at least 20 days of summer programming to experience academic benefits. Regular attendance begins with timely, targeted messages and messengers during student recruitment, and continues with personalized outreach and great programming during the summer.
About the Webinar
The National AfterSchool Association is hosting a webinar to explore effective strategies for Student Recruitment and Attendance, drawing from the Wallace Foundation’s Summer Learning Toolkit, a free, online resource featuring 50+ practical tools and resources to help district and their out-of-school time partners design and deliver high-quality summer programs. Resources draw from lessons from the National Summer Learning Project (NSLP) and align with research findings by RAND, included in Getting to Work on Summer Learning, 2nd edition.
Join us to explore resources and strategies that can help you communicate with families and prepare them to show up ready the first day, and coming back throughout the summer. We’ll also hear from Pittsburgh Public Schools, one of the districts featured in the National Summer Learning Project. What Does it Take to Build Afterschool Leadership Pipelines?
Building a leadership pipeline necessitates addressing institutional structures and policies and providing professional development for leaders throughout their careers. While the NAA Core Knowledge and Competencies for Afterschool and Youth Development Professionals set a foundation, this session involves deeper exploration of the opportunities and challenges in developing and supporting afterschool leaders. From a systems lens, we’ll talk about how strategic investments in leadership development can be a game-changer and we’ll learn about a statewide system that builds leadership capacity with a focus on supporting leaders of color. Thank you for your interest in applying to NAA’s Professional Learning Community for Emerging Leaders of Color (PLC).
Why is NAA’s Professional Learning Community for Emerging Leaders of Color (PLC) opportunity only for staff who identify as a person of color?
Research findings from the The Afterschool Leadership Landscape: Supporting and Strengthening Racial Equity report, along with research from the non-profit sector, shows that people of color are not being hired or promoted at the same rate as their white colleagues. One way to address this systemic inequity is to provide opportunities like these for leaders of color.
Research also shows that people of color thrive in leadership development spaces that are designed specifically for them and take into account their experiences with inequity, power, privilege and oppression.
Are we saying that people of color don’t have the skills to advance?
No. Leaders of color face systemic, institutional, interpersonal and cultural barriers to advanced leadership. This program acknowledges that this inequity exists and is creating an intentional space for leaders of color to explore leadership development that is designed for and by leaders of color.
What can supervisors expect of their staff who participate in this program?
Participants of this program will develop a heightened and sharpened analysis of the ways power, privilege and oppression operate. Participants will engage in deep self-reflection and will strengthen their awareness and understanding of their experience with power, privilege and oppression. Participants will gain tools, resources and skills that support their capacity to be equity-driven leaders and affect meaningful systems-level change.
What support will participants of the PLC need?
This is an intensive leadership experience that will require participants to devote time to attend the Opening Retreat March 15-18 in Washington, D.C., 4 virtual sessions from April-June and a closing retreat in July (location TBA). In addition to supporting participants to prioritize the work for the PLC, participating staff may need consistent space to reflect on their experience and support in implementing their Leadership Development plan.
What if I already know I have a conflict with one of the session dates?
This program is designed to create a space for participants to build a sense of community. Additionally, the content is progressive and for this reason, we ask that individuals apply only if they are able to attend ALL the sessions. As future funding is available to continue offering this program, NAA will work toward offering this leadership development opportunity in the future.
If my application is accepted, what are the costs for me to participate in this PLC?
Organizations are expected to cover staff costs, including wages, to enable their staff to participate fully in the PLC.

Is this PLC only for people of color or are other underrepresented groups able to apply?
This PLC is specifically designed for people of color. While the analysis of systems and levels of oppression will be intersectional, the content will focus intensively on racial justice and equity.
